Attending the iconic horse racing festival for three days can quickly cost more than £1,000 – and that is before punter forks out £7.80 for a pint of Guinness or £12 for a burger

The cost of attending Cheltenham Festival has fans saying watching the iconic horse racing carnival from sunny Benidorm is a "no brainer". Your Daily Star previously reported Brits are flying to the boozy holiday destination in their droves, making it one of he busiest week's in the Spanish city's calendar.

With the Gloucestershire racing meet kicking off today, punters took to social media to discuss the economic advantages choosing to watch the ponies from sunny Spain. Before even getting into Cheltenham Racecourse, fans attending the full festival are looking at forking out thousands for accommodation and a ticket before they spend £7.80 for a pint of Guinness and and £12 for a burger.

A pulled pork bap will set you back £11.50, chips cost £5 (make them cheesy for an extra £1.50) while a bacon and egg roll is £7.50. Flummoxed racing enthusiasts took to social media to express their frustrations.

Bluebell wrote on X: "What baffles me: Morons who pay £120 for a ticket, £400 a night for hotel accommodation that normally costs £100, £8 for a pint of Guinness and £12 for a burger to stand with 40,000 other morons at the Cheltenham Festival. Queue for the toilet and an hour to get out of car park."

However, a return flights to Benidorm costs around £50, accommodation is as low as £20 a night and a pint is as cheap as a £1. Tippy Tips said: "And they say we’re the problem… £50 return flight to Benidorm £20 accommodation per night €1/2 pints Sun Atmosphere round a pool Entertainment No brainer."

Hospitality staff doling out pints to sun-kissed Brits in Benidorm previously told the Daily Star, the racing festival is one of their busiest weeks. Ellie Fowler works in Morgan’s Tavern and said: “It’s one of the busiest weeks we have.

“We all know of Cheltenham week. It’s the start of the summer season to be honest. We are all called back into work as it gets so busy.

“It started after Covid. People wanted some sunshine and they literally plot up in the bars and put bets on each race like they would there, they’re just in Spain!”

And Benidorm blog Benidorm and Beyond added it was fast becoming one of the biggest weeks in the Spanish calendar. They say: “If Cheltenham is not part of your holiday planning this year, then head for Benidorm.

"It’s the next best thing. You have bars and big screens, outdoor terraces and an electric atmosphere.

“St Patrick’s Day caps off the week so it is always rammed. Everyone gets dressed in green, the music and the craic gets louder with the Boy’s Only groups and the Girls on Tour long weekenders. All having fun in the sun.

“Watching the Cheltenham Festival in Benidorm – who ever thought that would be a thing! You just need a passport to get to this one.”

One punter Scott McDermott, said: “Basically, it’s Cheltenham in the sun. Those early bird prices for Cheltenham 2025 are trying to entice you in at £86 per day.

"That’s JUST for your race ticket. Times that by four days and you’re at £344 before you’ve got transport or a place to stay. Then you’ve got your spending money - for food, drink and gambling. Suddenly, you’re over a grand.

“Our Benidorm return flights from Glasgow were £200. Three nights The Marina Hotel was £140 per person. And with some bars offering a pint for just two euro? That was our biggest winner of the week.”
