Emergency services warn people not to climb school gates after a mum got her arm impaled when she tried to enter her daughter's school on a Saturday to get her phone

A mum was left dangling more than six foot in the air in agony after she was impaled while trying to climb a school fence.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the woman, 37, fell as she tried to retrieve her daughter's phone.

Tradesmen working nearby raised the alarm and tried to rescue the woman as she 'dangled by her left arm' on the fence of Riverstone High School in northwestern Sydney, Australia, on Saturday morning.

NSW Ambulance inspector Nathan Sheraton told Australian media the woman had suffered significant wound to the inside of her left upper-arm' and remained conscious despite the pain.

He said: "[The woman was] dangling by her left arm on the fence of the school. [She suffered a] significant wound to the inside of her left upper arm. It's evident the fence tore some of the flesh which caused significant pain to her."

The woman, who has not been identified, was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital with fragments of the fence remaining in her arm. She was said to be in a serious but stable condition on Saturday night. Local news reported the woman had tried to climb the fence to retrieve her daughter's phone which had been left at the school.

Inspector Sheraton added: “If you ever want to enter a school there’s always sign boards on the school fence with the number of the security personnel. Give them a call, they’ll come out and help you, don’t climb the fence, it’s dangerous.”

Neighbour Katelynn Campbell said there were a "crazy" amount of emergency crews at the scene of the incident.

Describing the mum's decision as "insane, she told 7news: "I've never seen nothing like it in my life. She shouldn't be entering school grounds, her daughter could have waited until Monday to retrieve the phone. Instead, she's put her own life at stake."

Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement on social media: "Today firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 83 Riverstone were called to a rescue incident in Riverstone. Upon arrival firefighters located a person impaled on a fence about two metres in the air.

"Firefighters worked to stabilise the individual until specialist Rescue Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 063 Blacktown arrived. A platform was set up to allow access to the casualty and under the guidance of Aeromedical Doctors and NSW Ambulance, firefighters worked to remove the impalement and free the casualty from the fence.

"A coordinated effort by agencies resulted in a positive outcome for the patient."
